Last Week of School - May 2011

I want to take this opportunity to thank all of you for such a wonderful year!
Please remind your youngster to practice his multiplication table, addition and subtraction (using decimals with dollars and cents would be great), reading and writing.

In fact, here is a site where your child can register to win a prize for reading only 5 books this summer... http://www.bookitprogram.com/SummerBreak/
Check it out if you think you might be interested.

I hope all of you have a fun and safe summer vacation.  Remember, students, to come visit me next year.  I'd love to introduce you third-graders to my second-graders.  Congratulations on doing such a wonderful job this year!

May 16 - 20, 2011

This will be the last update for the 2010 - 11 school year.

Reminder:  Monday is Awards Day
Wednesday is Field Day... wear sunscreen... will your child
bring their lunch or need a sack lunch?

We will continue working on reading, writing, and math this week.

Every other day the students will be given an unknown topic, an hour to do their graphic organizer/rough draft, and their final draft.  This will give them the practice they need to prepare them for what they'll do in the third grade.  The following day we will go over their writing and discuss any problems they had and make suggestions to help them improve their final copy.

We will complete the CRCT Reviews in their textbooks and review the areas they're having difficulty.  This will be a daily activity... when they bring their textbook home on Friday, they should put it someplace where they can review what they learned over the summer.  FYI - practicing multiplication with flash cards will help prepare them for 3rd grade.  They need to learn their multiplication facts so it comes instantly to them and they don't have to count on their fingers...I know, it's a lot of repetition, but it will help them in the long run.

The only homework your child will have this week is unfinished classwork.  It will be stapled in their agenda with a note and will be due the next day.

Of course, we have some fun activities, too.... students will create a translation tessellation and begin working on their end of year class yearbook (their own creation).  If we still have time, we'll also make a rainstick.

Parents, thank you so much for all your help this year.  I really appreciate all you have done.  Students, thank you for allowing me the opportunity to teach you this year. I've enjoyed having you all in my class.

Congratulations to our newest 3rd grade students!

Week of May 9 -13, 2011

For parents who volunteered to help during Field Day:  I will send home a packet on Friday with a schedule for our class, games they'll compete in, and a list of students (to keep score).  Thank you for volunteering.

CLasswork:  This week we will be completing our DRA (test to determine current reading level), writing assessment, and begin our math review (CRCT review in textbook).

Homework:  WTW 30; define each word.  (Students will write various types of sentences in class using their spelling words.)

Week of May 02 - 06, 2011

We are testing every day this week!  Monday is the checkpoint Language Arts test.  Tuesday is the checkpoint Math test.  Wednesday is the checkpoint Reading test and make-ups for all tests.  Thursday is the IMI (math benchmark) in the morning and the Language Arts benchmark in the afternoon.  Friday is the writing assessment.  Whew!

Next week we will begin the DRA test (determines current reading level).

All library books need to be returned no later than May 04.

HOMEWORK:  Students brought home a worksheet to complete (sequencing sentences).  They also wrote their WTW 29 words in their agenda.  Their book should be completed and returned on Friday.  They should choose 10 of their spelling words and write a sentence for each one, underlining the word.  This should be returned Friday, too.  Not a lot of homework this week since we are doing so much in class.

Although Thursday is Cinco de Mayo, I'd like to bring in some food on Friday (afternoon) for the kids to try.  We have too much going on Thursday, but Friday afternoon will be clear for us to celebrate and discuss what Cinco de Mayo means.

Sunday is Mother's Day... Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers of our delightful students... enjoy your special day!
